Canine Physiotherapy

Whether your dog is a pet, working or sports dog, physiotherapy can be beneficial in maintaining a happy and healthy dog. Using massage, manipulation, stretching, exercise and electrotherapies we aim to speed up and improve recovery from injury, prevent initial injury or re-injury. We can also slow down the effects of aging on our older pets, helping to keep them happier and healthier for longer, providing longer careers for the sports and working dogs.

We do this through targeting the cause of the issue as well as the symptoms, making us different from some other treatment options. Every pet will recieve a custom tailored treatment plan to meet the need of the pet and their owner.

Rehabilitation

Just as in humans, injuries are a common occurrence in dogs, whether as a result of trauma, conformational defects or wear and tear.

Some injuries require surgical intervention, physiotherapy can be an essential tool to use, improving results from surgery. Research has found that recovery rates post surgery are faster and have a decreased occurrence of re-injury when physiotherapy is part of the post surgery treatment plan. A reduced need for pharmaceuticals is also often observed. This therefore makes the use of physiotherapy more cost effective for the owner in the long run.

Working alongside your veterinarian to provide your pet with the best results.

Some injuries can be successfully treated without the need of surgical intervention.

Aging Dogs

As your pets get older you will often see them start to slow down and no longer enjoy the activities they once did. The most common reason for this is osteoarthritis, with 80% of dogs over 8 years old suffering with the condition to some degree. They are often very capable at masking their symptoms, meaning that owners commonly do not realise the discomfort their animal is in.

Physiotherapy is effective in improving mobility in arthritic joints helping older dogs to be able to enjoy their walks and everyday lives again as they once did.

Maintenance

After a course of treatment in order to maintain the health of your animal it is sometimes neccessary to have monthly or bimonthly check up to ensure we are able to maintain the positive results seen.

The aim of the treatement is to be able to go longer and longer between treatments before they are longer neccessary, but we are always available for check ins or advice at any points.

Injury Prevention

Some dogs and breeds are predisposed to certain injuries. This is due to a variety of reasons but most commonly due to conformational or genetic defects or differences. Physiotherapy can be used to help reduce the effects of conformational abnormalities, and build muscle and fitness in the correct, and reduce compensation injuries.

In cases where we are able to intervene early, we are able to reduce the risk of serious injury. In the cases where injury does occur, it is usually less severe, the patient is are often in a better condition for recoverey. This means we may be able to avoid surgery and have a much quicker recovery.

Preventative treatment is less intensive than rehabilitation and morelikely to resemble a mainanence treatment program, as with all treatments, tailored to your pet and goals.
